Some of you may have missed the Enduring America story, and not a lot of other places have information, but last Wednesday President Hamid Karzai criticized the United States and demanded a withdrawal. The reasons for this aren't completely clear, but:
1. The war has gone on for a complete 7 years and the Taliban have still managed to fight on, even with NATO fighting them. The Afghans have started to realise that they aren't going down anytime sooner.
2. They are becoming a much weaker country, and perhaps want to prove they still have power by taking control of the situation and attempting to get rid of the terrorist group to get their country into order before it becomes to damaged to recover.
How will the Government respond to this? Well it could go in any direction. The Washington Post was the only news that hd information on this topic, maybe if a response is made it will become bigger news.

I don't think Karzai's government would survive for very long if US-NATO forces were to leave the country. We would probably see a repeat of 1992, when the Soviet-backed government collapsed following Soviet withdrawal. That government did hang on for quite a while, but internal divisions, loss of morale, etc. would cause Kabul to fall again - just like in 1992.
Failed countries are magnets for terrorists. They thrive in civil war environments. It's easy for them to conduct their operations in lawless countries. It's the last thing America wants.
Great post. I'm not sure how the new Obama national security team is going to handle this political situation. In fact, I'm not sure they appreciate how tenuous Karzai's (and by extension the American) position is, especially outside the capital.
